What is a paternity test

What is a Voluntary Acknowledgement of Paternity?

Also known as a VAP, it’s a way to legally substantiate your relationship as the biological father of your child. This is important because in Illinois law, if the child’s parents were not married at the time of birth, then legal steps must be taken to establish your paternity – and have your name inserted onto the birth certificate.

A VAP is a simple consent document, to be signed by both parents after the baby’s birth. Hospital staff can provide this document. As soon as this is completed, you do need to know that you have waived the right to future genetic testing.
